Basilian Fathers Museum
Basilian Fathers Museum
The museum was established by the Order of St. Basil the Great with the aim of preserving the rich history, culture, and religious heritage of the pioneers of the Beaver Lake-Mundare settlement and the early Basilians who served the area.
The dedicated efforts of future-bishop Fr. Neil Savaryn, OSBM, Fr. Meletius Solovey, OSBM, and Fr. Josaphat Jean, OSBM, played a crucial role in organizing and contributing artifacts to the museum. In July 1957, the museum opened its doors to the public. Initially located in a two-storey building that was previously the Basilian's Printing Press, it was situated behind the current Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church. Fr. Orest Kupranec, OSBM, served as the first museum director, with Fr. Jean holding the esteemed position of senior honorary director. The local Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada (U.C.W.L.C.) formed a Museum Committee, assisting with cleaning and maintaining the displays. These dedicated women also added their touch to the exhibits by showcasing embroidery, Easter eggs (pysanky), and other examples of folk art. Through the collective efforts of the Basilian community, Fr. Jean's personal collection, and the support of the U.C.W.L.C., the museum has thrived as a vital institution preserving the history and heritage of the area. It stands as a testament to the commitment of these individuals in safeguarding and sharing the cultural legacy of the Beaver Lake-Mundare settlement and the Basilians who served it.
