# Hamlet of Derwent

A Quiet Stop Along Alberta’s Old Rail Line

Derwent is small, but it sure knows how to have a good time. This little Alberta hamlet got its start in 1928 when the Canadian Pacific Railway opened a rail line through the area, turning it into a prairie service point for farms, families, and grain traffic.

. It became an official village in 1930, reached a peak population of about 301 people in 1959, and later returned to hamlet status in 2010 as railway-era traffic and local services changed. Today, Derwent still has that small-town underdog charm, with big memories, roadside character, and a welcoming stop at the Derwent Hotel and Pizza, where visitors can grab a slice, check for karaoke nights or live music, and catch community events like car shows, street dances, and show-and-shines. Pull over at the Tourist Park for a photo of the world’s largest lapel pin, then head in for pizza and a taste of the kind of quirky hospitality you only find in small-town Alberta.
