NORTHERN LIGHTS & DARK SKIES
If you are looking for where you can see the northern lights in Canada, The Lakeland is your place to experience outdoor adventure and be swept away by the grandeur of nature’s lights. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, these natural light shows are steeped in Canadian culture and history. Aboriginal peoples throughout our country experienced these grand light shows and they quickly became part of their oral traditions and history. To the Inuit peoples the northern lights were sky people enjoying a ball game, and for other indigenous peoples these lights were their own ancestral spirits blazing across the night.
Canada’s Lakeland is home to one of only a handful of Dark Sky Preserves in Alberta, these beautiful lights dance across the Lakeland skies throughout the year but are most vividly experienced from September through May. Dark Sky Preserves are areas where there is an area where the dark sky is preserved and no artifical lighting can obstruct your Aurora Borealis experience.
