The Spirit of Bonnyville CPCA Chuckwagon Races are three days of exciting Chuckwagon action.
Chuckwagon racing has deep roots in Alberta with the first event taking place at the Calgary Stampede in 1923. If you are new to the sport, here is a quick breakdown of what to expect – you have a wagon, horses, a driver and some outriders. The goal is to “break camp” the fastest so, if you’ve ever wondered why they toss a barrel in the back of the wagon, it represents the camp stove. Once the stove is in the wagon, they have to navigate a figure 8 and then hit the track. Oh – and the outriders have to do the same and keep up to the wagon! On the track, it is full out for 5/8 of a mile. Bonnyville’s track is known as the “Half Mile of Hell” and you’ll soon realize why when you see the wagons jockeying for position.
If you think you are going to passively sit in your seat and watch, just wait until Chuckwagon fever hits! Cheering loudly, yelling, cattle whistles, jumping, high fives and hoots and hollers are highly encouraged. As are cowboy hats, dusty jeans, bandannas and boots.
While you are on the grounds, there are a few other activities to check out:
- Friday night social gives you a chance to meet some locals including the Bonnyville Ag. Society volunteers who are hosting the event.
- Saturday morning starts with – you got it – the traditional Pancake Breakfast.
- Saturday night closes with a dance featuring a local band, Mid Life Crisis. Catch their video here.
